2023-03-24Views:383

The advancement of higher education and research worldwide is currently being impacted by numerous challenges such as the global crisis, changing geopolitics, ongoing neo-nationalism, and various local and institutional factors. In light of these challenges, the hybrid international conference "CGHE East Asia Researchers’ Meeting" was hosted by Professor HUANG Futao from Hiroshima University, Japan under the JSPS Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, in collaboration with the Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE) at Oxford University from March 19-21, 2023.

The conference aimed to identify the common and specific challenges that higher education and research in East Asian countries and systems are facing. With the goal of advancing higher education in the region, Professor LIU Niancai, Dean of the School of Education (SOE) at SJTU, was invited by the organizer to chair three sessions on national and regional higher education issues. Scholars from China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea (ROK) presented their latest national case studies, covering topics such as the changing landscape of Chinese college graduates’ choice of studying abroad, inclusion and global engagement in China and Japan's higher education, and research localization in ROK.

Professor FENG Zhuolin, Assistant Dean of SOE, also presented her research on world-class universities. The conference provided an important platform for scholars from the East Asian region to exchange ideas, insights, and solutions to the challenges they face in advancing higher education and research in their respective countries and systems.
